What Are QR Codes?

QR codes are those square geeky looking bar codes you’re seeing everywhere now.  QR stands for Quick Reference and that’s the idea – quick.

Using your smartphone you can take a picture of these codes to instantly load the link.  Simple!  You need an app for that:

  1. iPhone:  Bakodo – free in the App Store (what I use)
  2. Android: Barcode Scanner – free in the Android Market

Why QR Codes

  1. MUCH Easier – Long URLs (like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_code) are hard to type – especially on your phone!  Scan a QR code in 2 clicks and results in 2 seconds.
  2. History – Some scanners save the history of everything scanned.  Nice reference.
  3. Price Check – Some scanners search Amazon, Google, or others for a quick reference of price or reviews

Why QR Codes – For Business

  1. Track – Count who takes action on your ads, and when
  2. Easier – Makes it easier for your users
  3. Increase Response – Easier means users may be more inclined to “learn more”

How to Create QR Codes (free)

  1. Visit createqrcode.appspot.com
  2. Type in the URL, generate, and save the image

Did you know?

  1. Typical use is web links (URLs), but QR codes can store any kind of data – like a phone number, text message, etc.
  2. QR codes can be re-sized and still work!
  3. You can scan them right off a screen!  Download an app and try the sample above.
  4. Nothing new – well, to us, but not around the world.  They were invited in 1994 by a subsidiary of Toyota!
